A Minecraft server can cost nothing in cash, about $4–$8 a month for Realms, roughly $6–$30 a month for common small managed plans, or considerably more for a large modpack or community. Hosting at home may avoid a hosting invoice, but electricity, hardware, backups, internet, security, and your time still have a cost. A pay-as-you-go service can cost under €1 for an occasional world, yet become more expensive as runtime grows.

First decide how often the group plays, whether somebody will maintain the server, and which features are non-negotiable. Then compare the renewal total, not the largest promotional badge.
Minecraft Realms: $3.99 or $7.99 per month in the US
Mojang currently lists Bedrock Realms at US$3.99 per month for the owner plus two simultaneous friends. Bedrock Realms Plus and Java Realms are each US$7.99 per month for the owner plus ten simultaneous friends. Invited players do not need their own Realms subscription, and backups are included. That makes the annual arithmetic simple: twelve months at $3.99 is $47.88, while twelve months at $7.99 is $95.88, before tax. Pricing may differ by platform or country. Console players may also need the platform’s paid online multiplayer subscription, which is a separate cost rather than part of Realms.
Realms is attractive because there is little to administer. It is less suitable when you need custom Java server software, conventional file access, large modpacks, or Java and Bedrock players in the same world. Managed hosting: compare renewal prices, not teaser prices
A managed Minecraft host usually bundles a control panel, network protection, storage, and some level of support into a fixed recurring charge. The market is wide. As current examples, Shockbyte publicly lists a regular US$5.99 per month for 2 GB and US$23.99 for 8 GB, while Apex lists US$14.99 recurring for 4 GB and US$27.99 for 8 GB. These examples establish a range; similarly sized plans need not perform alike. CPU access, contention, storage, settings, and workload also matter. Before checkout, look for costs that may sit outside the headline plan:
- the renewal price after a discounted first month;
- VAT, sales tax, or currency conversion;
- paid backups, longer retention, or restore fees;
- extra storage and transfer limits;
- a dedicated IP, premium support, or migration service;
- a higher-priced location close to your players;
- modpack installation that is advertised but unavailable on the cheapest tier.
A provider including reliable backups and useful support can beat a cheaper plan with paid add-ons. A capable administrator should not pay for help they will never use.
Pay-as-you-go hosting: cheap only when the server sleeps
Usage-based hosting replaces a fixed monthly subscription with a resource-time calculation. exaroton is a clear public example: one credit is €0.01, and a running server costs one credit per GB of memory per hour. It bills actual runtime rather than rounding each session to a full hour. Its official pricing guide also describes a ten-credit monthly storage fee, reduced by the runtime credits spent on that server.
The runtime formula is:
monthly runtime cost = memory in GB × hours running × €0.01
For example, 4 GB running for 20 hours costs €0.80. The same allocation running continuously for 30 days costs €28.80. A two-weekend world can therefore be extremely inexpensive; a world active throughout each day may be better on a fixed plan.
Count online hours, not scheduled game nights. An overnight player or members in different time zones can erase the expected saving. Auto-stop helps only when the server actually stops.
Free hosting costs time and convenience instead of money
A free server can genuinely have a €0 invoice. Advertising, waiting, shared capacity, manual activation, restricted resources, or limited support may replace money as the trade-off.
Aternos, for example, says it is free forever, but its own help centre also explains that it does not provide 24/7 hosting; the server stays online while at least one person is active. Read the Aternos 24/7 hosting explanation before assuming “free” and “always running” are the same promise.

Home hosting: calculate electricity before calling it free
If you already own a suitable computer, hosting at home may require no new monthly subscription. The electricity calculation is:
monthly electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours on × electricity price per kWh
Suppose the whole machine averages 60 watts at the wall, runs 24 hours a day for 30 days, and electricity costs $0.20 per kWh. The monthly cost is 0.06 × 720 × $0.20 = $8.64. At 100 watts under the same assumptions, it becomes $14.40. Measure the complete system with a wall meter; a component’s rated maximum is not its average draw.
Add the costs people commonly omit:
- eventually replacing the computer, SSD, and backup drive;
- an uninterruptible power supply if outages matter;
- extra internet charges, a static IP, or a VPN/tunnel service if required;
- off-site backups rather than keeping the only copy beside the server;
- updates, monitoring, incident recovery, and the risk of exposing a home service.
A $240 spare PC used for two years represents roughly $10 per month before electricity, even without a monthly invoice. If maintenance is part of the hobby, time may cost little; if troubleshooting interrupts work or school, value it accordingly.
A VPS gives control, not managed Minecraft support
A general-purpose virtual server can look inexpensive until the owner adds administration and backup services. Amazon’s current Lightsail bundles with a public IPv4 address list US$12 per month for 2 GB and US$24 for 4 GB, including defined storage and transfer allowances. The official Lightsail bundle table also notes that plans vary when public IPv4 is removed or different resource families are selected.
This is not a host recommendation. A VPS gives you an operating system, not a Minecraft panel, tuned server, modpack installer, or game support. Snapshots, disks, excess transfer, and public addresses can cost extra. Billing may continue while an instance is stopped; check whether deletion is required to end charges.
Monthly versus annual: use the total, then calculate the saving
An annual plan often displays a low “per month” number even though the full year is charged upfront. Translate every offer with three equations:
effective monthly price = annual amount charged ÷ 12
annual saving = monthly price × 12 − annual amount charged
saving percentage = annual saving ÷ (monthly price × 12) × 100
For example, if monthly billing is $12 and annual billing is $108 upfront, the annual equivalent is $9 per month, the cash saving is $36, and the discount is 25%. It is inaccurate to call that “$9 monthly billing”: it is a $108 annual commitment.
Annual billing makes sense after a trial month. Paying for a year saves nothing if everyone stops after six weeks. Check upgrade credits, downgrade timing, and the auto-renewal rate.
Build a realistic one-year budget
Use this short worksheet before choosing any service:
- Write down the normal simultaneous player count and workload; do not buy from total invitation count.
- Record the regular monthly price, annual charge, tax, and every required add-on.
- Estimate real online hours if the service charges by use.
- For home hosting, measure watts and include hardware, backup, internet, and time.
- Divide the total by the number of people who will actually contribute—not everyone in the Discord.
- Keep an exportable backup so changing providers is a practical option.
- Start monthly or pay-as-you-go, observe one busy month, and only then consider an annual commitment.
For most small groups, the financially sensible choice is not the server with the lowest advertised number. It is the least expensive model that meets the group’s actual schedule, control needs, and tolerance for maintenance—without charging for resources or convenience nobody uses.
